Photograph of Monte Cristo Dude Ranch; left, Ike Blundel, Phil Blundel, Bud Blundel; photograph from a Christmas card; Washoe County, Nevada. 1930 WA-6562 Monte Cristo Ranch (divorce, dude), 1930 With a six-week residency requirement, Reno accommodated its visitors by building hotels and alley homes, converting ranches to dude ranches, and homes to boarding houses. The Riverside and the El Cortez hotels were built for the divorce trade. Residents partitioned their homes to rent out rooms. Some residents rented out their homes to divorcées and moved elsewhere. Other divorcées stayed in campgrounds. Monte Cristo Dude Ranch in 1930 was typical of the dude ranches where a divorcee might stay. The hosts guaranteed they would enjoy themselves.
