Effie Mona Mack was morn in Seneca, New York, and moved to Reno, Nevada in 1900. She graduated from Reno High School and attended first the University of Nevada, where she received her first Bachelor of Arts degree, and then Smith College in New York, where she received another Bachelor of Arts degree. She continued her education all through her life, and received her Master of Arts in 1916, a Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley in 1930, and a honorary Doctorate of Literature from the University of Nevada in 1948. Mack began teaching history and political science at Reno High School in 1914 and stayed there until her retirement in 1954. She also taught history at the University of Nevada during World War II and at Nevada Southern University between the years 1954 and 1956. Mack wrote extensively on the history of Nevada. Among her books were Nevada: A History of the State from the Earliest Times through the Civil War (1936) and Mark Twain in Nevada (1947). She also coauthored several school textbooks. Mack was a member of several volunteer committees, including the Nevada Commemorative Stamp Committee, the Nevada Centennial Commission, the Nevada Silver Centennial Committee, and she was active in the Beta Mu chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She was also a public lecturer. |
