The Nevada State Button Society is the Nevada State affiliate of the National Button Society, which was founded in 1938. The state society was organized in 1968. Society members are interested in collecting, sharing, trading, and showing unique and historic clothing buttons. The Nevada State Button Society has hosted annual button shows in Reno, and members have attended national button shows, as well as regional shows. Meetings and holiday parties include educational presentations, button raffles, and exchanges, as well as informal and social gatherings. The Nevada State Button Society generally met six times a year in various Washoe County library branches (12th Street, Sparks, Central) and in private homes. Button shows in Reno were held at the Holiday Inn, Comstock Hotel, and the Pioneer Center. The majority of members lived in Washoe County, with some in Las Vegas and Carson City. Long time members include Jo Weave, Maureen Adams, Dorothy Button, Eleanor Johnson, Virginia Bonner. Barbara Jepsen, Kathy Maurer, Gil Biggie, and May Ruth French (The Button Lady). |
