Mackay, Fair, Flood, and O'Brien Also known as the "Bonanza Firm"; business partnership of John W. Mackay (1831-1902), James G. Fair (1831-1894), James C. Flood (1826-1889), and William S. O'Brien (1826-1878), which owned the most important mines and mills and supporting business enterprises, on Nevada's Comstock Lode during the 1870s and 1880s. Business records, legal documents, and correspondence. Includes a printed volume of testimony from the California District Court case O'Reilly et al. vs. Flood et al. (1878), operational records, payroll records, insurance policies, and other materials relating to the Gould & Curry Silver Mining Company, Best and Belcher Mining Company, Ophir Silver Mining Company, Mexican Gold and Silver Mining Company, Consolidated Virginia Mining Company, California Mining Company, Consolidated California and Virginia Mining Company, Union Mining Company, and Hale and Norcross Consolidated Mines Company. Also includes records of the Pacific Mill and Mining Company, and the various ore mills (Bacon, Brunswick, California, Consolidated Virginia, Devil's Gate, Hoosier State, Kelsey, Mariposa, Morgan, Occidental, Omega, Rhode Island, Sacramento, Trench, Winfield, Woodworth) that this Bonanza Firm operated. (Among these records are some from the mills or milling companies prior to their acquisition by the Bonanza Firm.) Also includes a check issued to Kleupfer Brothers (August 3, 1874) by the Virginia City, Nevada, mill, drawn on the Virginia City agency of the Bank of California, and signed by James G. Fair; correspondence (January 3, 1879) between John Garber and Harry Innes Thornton, attorneys at law, and James Flood, John Mackay, and James Fair, regarding the case of Taylor v. Union Consolidated Mining Company; a receipt for 7440 pounds of ore shipped from the Gould & Curry Mine (August 27, 1862); and a check (June 4, 1874) issued to John McCone and signed by James G. Fair. In addition, there is an insurance policy (dated March 30, 1871) issued to John W. Mackay and William S. Hobart on the Woodworth Mill, situated on the Carson River about one mile above Dayton, Nevada; and a check (dated August 17, 1875) made out to the Pacific Mill and Mining Company and signed by James G. Fair. Correspondents in the general records of the firm include Henry C. Egerton, C. H. Knox, John B. Williams, Garber & Thornton (San Francisco lawyers John Garber and Harry I. Thornton), and Max Morganthau; company officers and major stockholders noted in meeting minutes of the Occidental Mill and Mining Company (1868-1871) include Thomas H. Williams, William Sharon, J. H. Higgs, William Weston, Simon Schleweck, Louis Reynolds, Joseph M. Douglass, Henry Sweetapple, John Rapp, Charles M. Mayer, J. Prescott Smith, Mark Strouse, T. F. Smith, L. W.
