John H. Kinkead was born in Pennsylvania and received his education in Ohio. He became engaged in business enterprises in St. Louis, Missouri,; Salt Lake City, Utah; California; and New York before settling in Nevada Territory. Kinkead was territorial treasurer and served in both constitutional conventions. In 1867, he moved to Alaska; he returned to Nevada in 1871. Kinkead was elected governor of Nevada in 1878, serving one term, and was then appointed territorial governor of Alaska. Following his resignation from that office, he again returned to Nevada and retired to a mercantile business in Carson City, Nevada. Correspondence and papers. Includes a note to G. S. Patrick (January 19, 1891); Thanksgiving proclamations (1881-1882) issued while governor of Nevada; four inscribed books from the personal library of Lizzie (Mrs. John H.) Kinkead; documents relating to the Princess Mining Company, with which he was involved; and an album of photographs of Alaska which purportedly belonged to Kinkead, who served as the first governor of the District of Alaska (1884-1885). |
