The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence between the superintendent's office at Sutro, Nevada, and officials at the company headquarters in San Francisco, California. There is also some incoming general correspondence, as well as business records showing reports on ore assays, workers employed, and the progress of work on the Sutro Tunnel and draining water from the mines of Nevada's Comstock Lode. Includes correspondence between the firm's New York office and George B. Thatcher, their attorney in Reno, Nevada. Correspondents include Adolph Sutro; company secretary Pelham W. Ames; company presidents C. W. Brush and Joseph Aron; superintendents Charles C. Thomas, F. A. Benjamin, and H. L. Foreman; engineer George J. Specht; H. S. Safford; R. S. Raw; Frank S. Young; Henry H. Sheldon; the London banking firm of McCalmont, Brothers and Company; Farmers' Loan and Trust Company (New York); and the Washington, D.C. law firm of Samuel Shellabarger and Jeremiah M. Wilson.
