The collection contains one item, an oversize scrapbook titled "The Captives." The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings (mostly photocopies), letters, and thank-you notes expressing community members’ gratitude for the musical performances of the Captives, most of which took places in hospitals, nursing homes, and children’s centers. |
Admin/Biographical History |
The Captives were three Northern Nevada Correctional Center inmates, plus one volunteer, who formed a musical group in the mid-1970s. The incarcerated members were Lloyd McPherson (piano), Dave Bell (guitar), and Gerald Rodgers (bass guitar); Kathy Palmetier, the vocalist, was a community member from Gardnerville, Nevada, who visited the prison once a week to practice with the group. The Captives were allowed to perform publicly while serving their sentences and often played at hospitals, nursing homes, and for children with special needs. Their work was part of Nevada’s self-help rehabilitation program for prisoners. |
