Captain Herman Davis was a well-known mine owner in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada. In 1893 he came to Nevada and purchased the Nevada Reduction Works and began the first cyanide concentration plant in the state. The collection consists chiefly of scrapbooks dealing with mining and the mineral industry; two ledgers (1875-1876) from a general merchandise store; a cash account ledger (1917-1918) from a land development company, probably in the Dayton-Carson City, Nevada, area; and a large number of photographs, most of which date from the 1900s. Principal photographic subjects include: Dayton, Nevada; Virginia City, Nevada, and the Comstock; mills and dredges on the Carson River; Masonic buildings in various communities; 1907 floods on the Carson and Truckee Rivers; and mining and milling activities at Pioneer, Ramsey, Rhyolite, Tonopah, Searchlight, Manhattan, and other turn-of-the-century mining camps.
