U.S. senator from Nevada. Patrick A. McCarran was engaged in farming and livestock near Reno, Nevada; a legislator; Nye County (Nevada) District Attorney; and Nevada Supreme Court justice before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1932. He served continuously from 1933 to his death in 1954. As a Democratic U.S. Senator, McCarran fought the New Deal policies and received wide recognition for his revised immigration law and internal security acts. The collection deals chiefly with national political activities and his travels to Nevada, Florida, and South America, with a small amount of material on McCarran's private land holdings. Included are letters and telegrams to McCarran from Eva B. Adams (his administrative assistant) and one piece of correspondence regarding the British Consul and the "Ashford matter" in Rhyolite while McCarran was Nye County District Attorney. The collection contains material on McCarran's early political and legal careers in Nevada; his senatorial papers (1933-1954), most of which deal with national security, immigration, aeronautics, military and veteran affairs, mining, reclamation, and Nevada politics; scrapbooks (1933-1954); photographs; and personal, religious, and political papers of McCarran's daughter, Sister Mary Margaret Patricia McCarran.
