Scope & Content |
John T. Reid was a geologist and mining engineer in the Lovelock, Nevada, area for most of his life, and, together with members of his family, started a series of mining firms which held properties in various places across Nevada. Reid was better known, however, for his extensive research into anthropology, archaeology, and his "Mayan" mathematical scheme based on a belief that Nevada was the center of the universe in prehistoric times. In pursuit of information dealing with this theory, Reid corresponded with leading scholars in the fields of anthropology for many years and had articles published in many newspapers and journals across the nation. John T. Reid was also a confidant of Lovelock area Indians for all of his life and interceded frequently in their behalf with the Bureau of Indian Affairs as well as other government agencies. Enjoying his close relationship with Skinny Dave and other well-known Indians, Reid accumulated a large collection of legends and other materials relating to early life in Nevada before the coming of Europeans. The collection contains voluminous correspondence and articles relating to Reid's interest and studies in Nevada anthropology and archaeology; letters written for North American Indian friends; legends and other information he collected about pre-Columbian Indian life; and correspondence relating to business records of Reid's mining concerns. Mining companies represented include Buena Vista Iron Mines Company, Buffalo Valley Gold Mining and Leasing Company, Juniper Mines Company, Mines Development Company of Nevada, and Nevada United Mining Company. Records of a general store operated by Paul Reid (John's brother) at Lovelock, Nevada, are also included. Subjects: Buena Vista Iron Mines Company. Buffalo Valley Gold Mining and Leasing Company.
